2nd CAUCASIAN REGIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL ON CLINICAL EPILEPTOLOGY (CRSSCE)

The new educational initiative - "Caucasian Regional Summer School on Clinical Epileptology" - has been started in 2008 to take place once a year in different Caucasian Countries. It is a clinically - oriented course, targeted to specialists at the second and third level of epilepsy care and focused on comprehensive aspects of diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. The first course was organized in Armenia, very successfully.

Target audience

The Caucasian Regional Summer School on Epilepsy is addressed to applicants providing care for patients with epilepsy and who wish to refine their skills in epileptology. Specialists in neurology, psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, pediatric neurology, pediatrics, clinical neurophysiology and psychology are welcome to apply.

The CRSSCE addresses doctors primarily from the Caucasian region, but applicants from other countries may also be accepted in case there are still places available.

Program

The course is focused on comprehensive aspects of diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. It will also include the basic sciences in clinical epileptology issues and comprehensive care and rehabilitation of patients with epilepsy. Different issues of adult and pediatric epileptology will be covered.

The faculty will consist of leading European epileptologists, including members of the Commission of European Affairs.
The didactic format will promote the combination of lectures and interactive case discussion. Case orientated learning is emphasized. Didactic cases provided by tutors and case reports prepared by participants are planned to be discussed in small group of participants.

Learning objectives

The course, on completion, will enable the participants to receive the up-to-date information and expert opinion on the main topics of clinical epileptology, to improve their competence and gain practical skills in the diagnostic work-up and decision-making concerning the management of different aspects of pediatric and adult epileptology. The tutorials held by experienced epileptologists through interactive education are expected to provoke vivid discussions and to stimulate critical diagnostic approach, especially regarding the EEG, neuroimaging and pharmacotherapy. Didactic cases provide by tutors in case-oriented learning will be useful to students in dealing with clinical problems in daily practice. By presenting their own case or scientific reports during the group sessions, the participants are encouraged to improve the competence and confidence in lecturing and teaching.

The teaching methodology is elaborated in cooperation with EUREPA.

The Caucasian Regional Summer School on Clinical Epileptology will be given in English.

The 2nd Caucasian Regional Summer School on Clinical Epileptology will take place in Bazaleti, close to Tbilisi, Georgia, from October 4-9, 2009.

Organizers: ILAE Commission on European Affairs (CEA)/ European Advisory Council (EAC), European Epilepsy Academy (EUREPA).
Local organizer: Geprgian League Against Epilepsy (GLAE), Georgian Association of Child Neurologists and Neurosurgeons (GACNN), Georgian Society of Young Epileptologists (GSYE), Association of Epilepsy and Environment (AEE).

Duration: October 4-9, 2009 Whole 5 day work was planned + arrival/departure days.
Location/venue: Bazaleti Complex, Bazaleti, close to Tbilisi, Georgia (www.Bazaletilake.ge). - accommodation for tutors and participants and well-equipped rooms for the whole-day work.
Participants: Maximal number is 50 to allow for an optimal level of interaction with the trainees. Applicants will be selected by the Organizing Committee primarily on the basis of their case reports submitted.
Priority: European ILAE chapter members and applicants preferably up to 45 years of age.
Bursaries: A number of bursaries will be available, applicants are encouraged to apply. The bursary covers the registration fee, full accommodation and travel expenses. Please note that according to the decision on the Commission on European Affairs, only one bursary per year per person is possible, so recipients of other bursaries provided by the CEA in 2009 (i.e. bursary for EUREPA distance education) are not eligible for the bursary for this Migrating Course. Still they are welcome to participate with the payment of the registration fee.
Registration fee: 1000 Euro The fee includes accomodation (in twin room), full board, transfer airport-hotel-airport, handouts, and access to all educational activities (lectures, tutorials, case discussions, video sessions). Please note that it will be possible to have a single room if the extra charge is paid additionally and upon advance request.

Each candidate for the 2nd Caucasian Regional Summer School on Epilepsy is required to submit:
  1. Application form (the need for a bursary should be indicated in it)
  2. Case report from student's clinical practice with patients with epilepsy;
  3. Curriculum vitae (CV) and list of publications
  4. Letter of intent
  5. Recommendation from the ILAE Chapter or the Head of the Department
NB: Please check if you need an entrance visa to Georgia. If this is the case, please inform the local organizer as soon as possible in order to timely start your visa preparations.

Case reports provided by trainees are expected to be:

  • specific and with some difficulties / problems in clinical semiology, diagnostics, classification and therapeutic strategy and possibly showing some unusual clinical features
  • it is recommended that case report includes questions addressed to audience for the discussion, and concluding student's answers, explanations and ideas to be presented after comments of a group
All reports will be evaluated by the Organizing Committee members. Its presentation will be organized in the small-group sessions.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CASE REPORT SUBMISSION


  • Specific and with some difficulties and possibly showing some unusual clinical features
  • The report should be prepared as MS Word File, in English (no more than 1000 words, font Arial, size 12, line spacing 1.5)
  • The first page must include: title, applicant's name, the institution, city and country
  • The Case Report must be comprised of:
    • Description of case
    • Findings of physical examination
    • Diagnosis
    • Differential diagnosis
    • Diagnostic work-up discussion
    a. Patient management discussion
    Drug Products should be identified by their non-proprietary names only

  • Authors are responsible for the linguistic accuracy and ethical standards
  • All presentations will be reviewed by the Organizing Committee
  • CD with case reports prepared as MS Word File, or adapted in a PDF format should be sent by post-mail to Organizing Committee as soon as possible.
